Biovotion receives prestigious European eHealth award

2013/05/13

Yesterday, Biovotion was honoured with a prestigious eHealth EU SME competition award, at the eHealth week 2013 in Dublin, Ireland. Over the last six months, ten companies were selected, from more than 200 registrants, to enter the final of the EU SME eHealth competition. Biovotion was awarded the silver medal for the development of its VSM platform.

The awardees were selected by an international panel of eHealth experts, venture capital investors and industrial representatives, during the biggest European eHealth conference, bringing together more than 3000 international attendees from industry, healthcare, academia and politics, with the participation of major European political leaders.

"The team at Biovotion has been working very hard in the last few years to achieve the product level now regarded as being amongst the European leaders as a new player in the field of mHealth", says Andreas Caduff, CEO and Co-Founder of the company. "We are very pleased with this distinction, taking it as a further motivation to continue our path towards the market ".

With “consumerised healthcare” rapidly advancing and the medical device space seeing a transition towards patient home monitoring concepts, Biovotion sees its expertise and product development as instrumental in delivering solutions to this unfolding market.

Together with the continuing increase in healthcare costs, growing numbers of chronically ill patients or the number of elderly people that wish to pursue an independent life style, adequate monitoring is becoming key to tackle these challenges. With the VSM platform showing parity with standard hospital based systems today, Biovotion sees itself well positioned to provide such key elements.

Such a transition in healthcare has not only become an industry driven process but particularly has been recognised on a political and policy makers level globally, placing this topic as a top priority on the agenda of many decision makers. This was also acknowledged by both Neelie Kroes, European Commission Vice-President for the digital agenda as well as Tonio Borg, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Affairs in their key note speeches.

About Biovotion

The Vital Sign Monitor (VSM) is a wearable multi-sensor platform for continuous, non-invasive monitoring of physiological parameters. Measurements are securely transmitted to a portable device, such as a smartphone, for further processing and transmission into cloud storage. The VSM1 measures the following parameters under everyday life conditions: heart rate, blood oxygenation, movement, cutaneous blood volume and perfusion, as well as skin temperature. The unique design of the optical sensors, signal processing algorithms together with a highly comfortable attachment concept ensure reliable monitoring of blood circulation in a reflection mode on freely moving individuals. The device can be discretely and comfortably worn on the upper arm during regular activities without the inconveniences associated with the common finger pulse oximeters. It has been demonstrated that the VSM platform provides vital sign data quality on par with standard hospital devices – robust, accurate and easy to use.

Big Data - Biovotion at HealthStartup conference

2012/06/15

HealthStartup announces its III. conference to be held June, 26 in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. The theme of this edition is ‘Big Data’ and it is focused on health startups that place data at the heart of their business model and business proposition.

Big data will increasingly help revolutionise medicine and medical care. Extensive data from a large number of patients or patient groups from their daily life combined with information related to their underlying prescribed treatment, its effects and behaviour information will be of major interest to health care providers, payment organisations or the pharmaceutical industry. An essential requirement for generating reliable data during daily life is the availability of monitoring devices that allow robust, easy and accurate operation by the patient in a home environment. Biovotion will elaborate on its ability to facilitate the provision of big data, as well as present its respective wearable and movement tolerant physiological monitoring system. Biovotion will present its VSM development around its wearable platform and the continuous data to be collected from a day life environment.

About Biovotion

Biovotion is developing truly wearable medical devices for continuous, non-invasive physiological monitoring. The company holds extensive expertise in combining sensors, creating miniaturised, cable free multi-sensor systems, that can be easily worn on the body, allowing reliable monitoring during everyday life. Integration with cloud services provides a true mHealth environment, optimised for patient home monitoring solutions. Biovotion’s initial vital sign monitoring platform is termed VSM1.

Experiences from the eHealth week 2012 in Copenhagen

2012/05/22

Biovotion has attended a fascinating and inspiring eHealth week WoHIT conference 2012 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Earlier this year, Biovotion was elected as one of the 30 European finalists for the EU SME eHealth competition and had the opportunity to present its VSM solution for home monitoring in e.g. COPD patients.
This event is the biggest and probably most important event in the year in the arena of eHealth and indeed it has been a very useful, inspiring and impressive experience.
The eHealth week 2012 focused on the continuity of care from the home to hospital and back to home, demonstrating how information can flow between these different care settings. It included topics such as patients’ empowerment and chronic disease management involving investment and business opportunities in healthcare IT. It became evidently clear that a number of developments are about to become a “mandatory” reality particularly in patient home monitoring.
In essence politicians, reimbursement agencies and other stakeholders have placed the following message:

a) Patients need to be kept out of the hospital as much as possible

b) Patients with (multiple) chronic conditions are the biggest burden to the healthcare budget, particularly those that have repeated acute conditions

c) Appropriate monitoring will need to be available to the patient at home/daily life, meaning that home monitoring becomes key

d) (Real-time) data is needed to support outcome based treatments and to make sure to support the above a-c

Despite the fact that Biovotion’s VSM solution is not yet commercially available in the market today, Biovotion was elected as one of the top 30 European SMEs in eHealth to present its solution. The presentation can be seen here.
The presented Vital Sign Monitor (VSM) is a wearable monitoring device for continuous, non-invasive monitoring of physiological processes based on a multi-sensor concept. Measurements are securely transmitted to a portable device, such as a smartphone, for further processing. The unique design of the optical sensors and signal processing algorithms ensure reliable monitoring of blood circulation in reflection mode during everyday life. The device can be discretely and comfortably worn on the upper arm during regular activities without the inconveniences associated with the common finger pulse oximeters.
With its VSM 1 product development Biovotion is very well positioned to deliver not only a new generation of vital sign monitors but a solution with a high degree of inter-operability to a mHealth environment.
